For our 15-year wedding anniversary, we decided to go somewhere in the Caribbean. My parents are experts at all things Sandals (this was their 10th Sandals trip) so with their recommendation along with the help of our travel agent, we booked a 7-night trip to Sandals Regency La Toc in Saint Lucia. In this blog, I will share all things La Toc so that if you plan on going you will know exactly what to expect. I will cover the beach, the restaurants, the room, the resort overall, and I will even share my packing list to help you pack.

Planning Your Trip

There are so many all-inclusive resorts that you can choose from with locations all over the world. If you choose Sandals, you can book directly through them, or you can go the route we did and book through a travel agent. If you choose to book through them, you can use their website, app, or you can even call and speak to a representative who can book your trip for you over the phone. They have a loyalty program where you can earn points for your stays, and they have different loyalty levels that get you different benefits the more you stay with them.

Once we decided what island we wanted to go to, we had to decide on the resort. There are three Sandals on Saint Lucia and we choose the “middle” one (in size, energy level, amount of restaurants, price, etc). We contacted our travel agent who arranged our room type, flights, and got all of the details together for us. We ended up booking some excursions about two months in advance (which you can either do in advance on the Sandals app or website or you can do in person when you arrive at the resort) but otherwise all we had to do was wait until vacation started.

Things To Know:

• Passport is required!

• Sandals is adults only!

• Currency:

  • The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, however every place we went accepted the US Dollar.

• Tipping:

  • Sandals prohibits tipping any employees except for butlers or spa personnel. Instead, you can complement an associate to the management team or utilize their feedback system “The Loop” to write them a review and share recognition.

  • We did bring some smaller bills to tip our driver, luggage attendants at the airport, and guides during our excursions since those were outside our Sandals experience.

• Restaurant Reservations:

  • Only La Toc and Kimonos require reservations. They cannot be made until you are on the property, and you will want to make them ASAP because they book up fast!

  • All of the other restaurants are first come first serve.

• Dress Code:

  • Camouflage is illegal to wear in St. Lucia.

  • Most of the restaurants are “resort casual” but if you want to eat at La Toc, you must bring something “resort evening”. This is dress pants or jeans for men, long or short sleeve dress shirts (with or without collar). Dress shoes or sandals. No shorts, t-shirts, sleeveless shirts, sneakers, flip flops, or sneakers. No hats.

• Smoking:

  • There were very specific smoking areas throughout the resort for any guests who partake. Smoking is not allowed in any enclosed area on any Sandals property and is limited to the designated smoking areas.

• “Island Time”:

  • If you are someone who values lists, punctuality, following a schedule, etc., I need to tell you about Island Time. Things will not have the same sense of urgency that you are used to. Things will take longer-not because no one cares, but because you are on vacation and are meant to pause and savor things. It may seem like it takes a very long time in between courses at mealtime, it may seem like things do not start on time (like pool volleyball), the shuttle may be late. It’s completely normal. Take a breath. I had to take many.

• Not Wheelchair Accessible:

  • This is a huge opportunity. There was not a single elevator on property. If you stayed on the ground floor you would have access to the main pool, the Pavilion restaurant, Neptunes restaurant, and Bella Napoli restaurant. You have to check in on what is actually the second floor so unfortunately it would be super challenging.

• Outlets:

  • There were many north American, and UK outlets in our room, so you do not need to worry about packing a converter unless coming from a country where neither of these are used.

• Customs:

  • Coming in, you will need to go online and fill out immigration/customs form up to three days before your trip. If you do this, you will not have to fill out a paper form at the airport, you can simply show your QR code to the customs agents at the airport and save some time (link below).

• Souvenirs-

  • There were not many opportunities to purchase souvenirs. The gift shop at the resort had some typical things like jewelry, shot glasses, wind chimes, magnets, t shirts, some alcohol, hats, and some wooden carvings (the wooden photo frames were around $65). They only had one post card and it was of some random house (we were expecting a variety of post cards and of beaches, palm trees, etc.) which we were really surprised about. One day the resort had local vendors on the property with their jewelry and carvings and bird houses (around $45) and things, and one day we saw a local vendor on the beach, but other than that, there were some shops as we were leaving the airport. During both of our excursions we encountered some locals with items they were selling, and we wished we had taken more time to look then as we thought there would have been more opportunities to get some items to take home to loved ones that were more unique.

• Stay at one, visit all three:

  • There are two other Sandals properties on Saint Lucia (The Grande and Halcyon), and you can go and visit them as often as you via a complementary shuttle! You can enjoy their pools, their beaches, their bars, and their restaurants all for free!! We absolutely took advantage of this for a half day and went to the Halcyon resort to explore and have dinner.

• The Service:

  • The team members at the resort were some of the most incredible people I have ever encountered in the world of hospitality. From the managers, to the waitstaff, to the housekeepers, this team was extremely friendly, and kind and they went above and beyond to ensure that guests had a pleasant and relaxing experience. So many people remembered our names, every person we passed (no matter what they were doing) stopped and greeted us, and you could genuinely feel that these people were interested in saying hello or having a conversation.

  • They go above and beyond to ensure you have an amazing experience. At lunch one day at a restaurant, I overheard a guest ask his server where people were getting the coconuts that they were drinking from. Not only did the server share the information with the guest (a gentleman brings them from the beach each day and they pass them out by the pool), but he LEFT the restaurant and went to go get him a coconut and brought it to his table so that he could have one.

  • With all the guests changing over all the time and with the team working such long hours and long stretches of days at a time, I have no idea how they can remember so many guests by name and how they can have such pleasant energy that is so consistent. We were so impressed.

• Transport to/from Resort:

  • Roundtrip shuttle transportation is automatically arranged and included in the cost of your vacation. In St. Lucia, once you get through customs, there is a Sandals representative who escorts you to a Sandals lounge with snacks and beverages where you can rest while you wait for your shuttle.

  • It is about an hour ride from the airport to the resort and the ride is not for those who suffer from even mild motion sickness. You will go up and down many mountains, and around and around many sharp turns and curves and bends in the road. Be prepared with whatever helps you with this! You will need it.

  • You can organize other options if you would like, but they would be at your expense, and would be up to you to organize. In St. Lucia, you can organize helicopter transfer, ferry transfer, or private car transfer.

• Tips/Tricks:

  • In addition to looking at the website/app I joined some Facebook groups that I found super helpful. They posted photos, menus, schedules, FAQ’s, etc that I could look at leading up to my trip. This helped me decide what restaurants I wanted to eat at, which excursions I wanted to take, it even could help influence which room you may want to book.

• The App:

  • We used the app before our trip to book our two excursions and we also utilized the vacation countdown feature. While we were there, in the app you could see a daily schedule of events and the “theme” of the day. Be aware that you are on “Island Time” and things do not start on time very often and they certainly were never updated on the app if there was a cancelation or if the location was changed. As someone who frequents Disney and who relies on their app, this was really challenging for me. There were times where the nightly entertainment was not where it said it was going to be based on the app, there were times activities were not at the time they were supposed to be based on the app. Take a breath, ask someone.

    • The thing that probably puzzled us the most about the app is that lack of communication through this platform. While we were there, a tropical storm passed through (it was pretty major as we were out of power for 5 hours and restaurants and pools were shut down for a day). Rather than communicate restaurant closures, safety information, pool closures, etc. through the app, they just didn’t communicate it at all. We had to find someone to ask and often got conflicting information. I understand that you are on vacation, and this is a time to detach from your mobile device but again seemed like a missed opportunity.

    • T-Shirts- In the app it asks you to fill out your personal info and includes your T-shirt size. My parents have a ton of shirts from each of their trips and wear them with pride. Just so you know, you do not get a T-shirt if it is your first visit. You must be a returning guest to get a free T-shirt (we thought this was a bit misleading, especially since they asked for your size up front and were a little disappointed).

Packing

I love a list, and I started making my packing list about a month in advance, and then started moving things into my suitcase in our spare bedroom a little at a time so that I didn’t have to pack everything all at once. Below is a screenshot of my packing list as well as a printable version. I used everything that I took but the three most valuable items were:

1. Dramamine-My husband used the pills, the gum, and the wristband.

2. Sunscreen-It is so much more expensive if you have to buy it there, so we made sure to over pack this just in case.

3. Bug spray-Especially in the evenings or if it rained. It was also handy when we went on our excursions in the rainforest and when we went horseback riding.

The Resort

Set on 220 acres of lush tropical greenery, La Toc hugs a half mile crescent shaped beach and offers 9 restaurants, 8 bars, a golf course, and access to two other Sandals resorts.

As soon as we got off the shuttle, we were greeted with a refreshing cold towel and the friendly staff of Regency La Toc. They welcomed us with a song, and then called us by name to get us our room numbers and go over the resort map, Wifi, restaurant schedule, how to use the app, etc. We sat in a room off to the side of the lobby where the wedding desk and restaurant reservation desk were located and were given some champagne to enjoy while we reviewed all of our check in information. Mom and Dad have been to Sandals 9 times before this and are big time loyalty members, so they got to go to the special loyalty room.

We were then escorted to our room by a staff member and when she opened the door our luggage had already been delivered! She walked us through all of the features of the room and then left us to get settled in.

Spa & Fitness Centers

There are two fitness centers on property equipped with top-of-the-line equipment for cardio or weight training. They also offer complementary classes or 11 private training options for an additional fee.

The Red Lane Spa offers a variety of massages, facials, body polishes, hair styling, makeup application, manicures, or pedicures. You can pamper yourself just because, or you can utilize their services for a special occasion, like your bridal makeup or your anniversary photo session. You can utilize their sauna or steam room as a complementary service each day if that is something you are into.

This place has it all! You can do some shopping at the boutique or the Jewlery store, you can stop by the loyalty & travel office to get a special discounted price on your next Sandals vacation (it is always cheaper to book while you are currently on a Sandals vacation), you can book excursions at the Island Routes desk, you can check out your photos from your session, or you can even stop by the medical center should you need any medical assistance.

The Pools

La Toc offers three pools for you to enjoy during your stay. The main pool is by far the most popular and is the largest. It offers a swim up bar and has entertainment that goes on throughout the day. It is also the only one with beach access. We brought our own dollar tree pool floaties that the scuba shop blew up for us, however this pool did offer some floats that you could utilize.

Staff members would periodically come by offering ice waters or the drink of the day to the guests lounging by the pool (they would also ask if you needed anything from the bar), and you could go get as many drinks as you wanted from the bar all day long. They also had a gentleman come from the beach with fresh coconuts almost every day and they would put them in a huge bin of ice and cut them right there, put a straw in them, and serve them up for guests to enjoy. We also had a member of the Red Lane Spa team come by one day while we were laying by the pool with an Aloe and Witch Hazel (I think) spray that they were offering to spray on any red skin or sunburn to help promote healing and relief from any burn.

There is a smaller pool over by the Piton restaurant, and a third pool over by Armando’s restaurant. This pool is frequented by the guests who all have butlers, and it is hard to get a seat at this pool because most of the chairs are reserved early in the morning by the butlers. It is the second largest and also has a swim up bar.

If you really care about where you sit, I recommend going early and claiming your chairs by using a towel and towel clips (we ordered cute little parrot ones from Amazon, so they were unique and easy to spot-link below). This way, no one else tries to sit in your chair (although someone did still put their things in our chairs at the fancy butler pool-awkward).

Other Features/Areas of the Resort

There are so many areas to explore, lounge, and take amazing photos during your trip. While the main pool area by the Emerald Village is the most popular spot, the area by the Sunset Oceanview Bluff Millionaire Suites is absolutely stunning! To get there, you can either take a shuttle or take a 10-minute hike up a pretty steep hill. Along the way you will pass by the Soy Sushi Bar and Kimonos Restaurant, a lookout area, as well as Armando’s Restaurant and the fancy butler pool area.

The Entertainment

Once you arrive on the property, you will have access to a daily schedule in the app. They also supposedly have it up on a screen each day (we never saw it) and some guests have said they got a printout in their room each day (we never got this).

There were things to do throughout the day such as trivia, ring toss, minute to win it, pool volleyball, Bocce ball, etc. to help fill your day while lounging around at the resort.

There were also shows or events every evening to enjoy such as a fire show, a steel drum band, a beach party, a variety show (when we were there it was themed after the movie Burlesque), a country music performer, etc.

I have also included our daily planner that our family created to help us ensure that we got the most out of our vacation. Some people would rather just go with the flow, but we prefer a structure to make sure we get in all the activities that we want to experience.

Our Room

Luxury Poolside

These newly renovated & elegant poolside rooms overlook the resort pool and have partial ocean views. All rooms feature a custom crafted king-size bed, flat screen TV, sitting area and a bathroom with a walk-in shower and back-lit mirror. Accented with a decorative French balcony with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. These rooms are located at the heart of the resort in the Esperance building on the second & third floors. For your refreshment, your room includes Robert Mondavi varietal wines and a refrigerator stocked with bottled water, juice, soda and local beer. Starting at $230-description taken from Sandals.com.

We found our room to be spacious and comfortable. Our air conditioner worked well and kept us cool when we were relaxing at night or getting changed for dinner. We had 6 Eruopean and 3 US outlets in our room which made it really easy to plug things in and keep things charged. The king-sized bed was delightful, and we slept soundly every night. Our refrigerator was restocked each day with waters and soft drinks and beer, and our wine was restocked on the days that it had been opened. Our toiletries were also restocked daily.

The “turndown” service in the evenings was inconsistent and we only had it twice. We were also expecting flowers in the room or cute animals or hearts on the bed or in the bathroom made from the towels (because we had seen this on the website and on the Facebook page, and we were there on our actual anniversary) but we did not ever see this in our room or my parents room. They did leave a piece of chocolate cake in our room the night of our anniversary, but there was no card or anything.

The only complaint I have is that on the country music night we went to bed around 10pm and because of the location of our room (right beside the main pool) and the location of the entertainment, it was quite loud, and we could hear everything just as if we were at the entertainment.

Views from our Rooms

The Beach

One of the biggest draws and where we spent most of our time was the beach. La Toc offers a half mile beach with white sands and clear sparkling waters. They indicate how rough the waters are each day with flags that they put up around the rock walls by the beach (either green, yellow, or red). They have beach chairs that are first come first serve, and some even have a cool shade covering that you can use. We never saw seaweed on the beach, and it was relatively clean and well kept (the staff was up early cleaning the beach each morning).

We really enjoyed walking back and forth looking for shells and our favorite, sea glass! We even found a few coins!! Right where the waves broke onto the shore there was a treasure trove of shells, so we often had to put on our water shoes and work quickly to grab what we wanted before the next wave came in or put on our snorkeling gear and look around as the waves crashed around us. The farther to the cliffs you got, the more fish you could see while snorkeling.

They had a net that surrounded the “swimming” area closest to the beach in the water and they also had three floats that were anchored in the water for people to utilize. As you walked closest to the cliffs, they had a lovely little swing that you could enjoy, and on the opposite end is where all the water activities were organized. You could rent snorkeling gear, kayaks, paddleboards, or Hobie cats all for free at a first come first serve basis. You could also sign up for jet skis and water excursions for an extra cost.

Everyday there would be representatives from tour groups that were not operated by Sandals just down the stairs and on the beach. They were not pushy at all, but they would try to engage with you to see if you were interested in booking a tour or excursion with them. The “Joe Knows” tour is extremely popular and can be booked this way.

The Restaurants

La Toc offers 9 restaurants for guests to enjoy during their stay. Every restaurant is different, from the theme to the flavors, and you can visit them as often as you want and can order as much as you want because it is all inclusive! Two of them require a reservation (and they fill up fast), and one of them requires “Resort Evening” dress code. Read on as I share some info and photos about the restaurants.

Armando’s (Dinner)

Armando’s is open for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner and is the resort’s Italian restaurant. Reservations are not required for this restaurant, but it is a popular one so you will need to be prepared to wait or get there early to snag a table. We had dinner here our first night and ended up coming back for dinner a second time and also came for breakfast once. It is up the hill by the Butler rooms so make sure to plan for this if you are staying on the other side of the resort. If you don’t want to walk, you can take a shuttle.

Armando’s Breakfast

On our last full day, we decided to go up to Armando’s right as they opened to avoid the crowd and have breakfast. The rest of the week we had been having the buffet at the Pavilion and this was definitely a decadent treat and worth the walk up the hill. The Crunchy Banana French Toast was one of our favorite dishes of the whole trip!

The Cricketer’s Pub

Modeled after a British Pub, the Cricketer’s is a great place for some good old bar food or some tasty fish and chips and an ice-cold Piton beer. We had a late lunch here on our first day because we came in absolutely starving from our travel and really enjoyed the wings and fish and chips. The fries here were the best out of everywhere on the resort!

Neptunes/Bella Napoli (Lunch)

On Monday before one of our excursions, we decided to grab lunch at Neptunes. The pizza restaurant Bella Napoli is right beside it, and they are happy to let you order pizza from Neptunes and they just go over and place the order to that kitchen and bring your pizza over to your table when it is ready. Most people grab pizzas and take them by the pool as there are just a few tables out on a little paved area next to the Neptunes covered dining area. They offer gluten free crust on all of their pizza if you need it. This was one of our island time moments. We were having lunch before our excursion and needed to be somewhere by 1:00pm. We sat down at our table at 11:45am and did not get our first few food items until 12:28. Island time baby. Plan accordingly.

The Pitons

The Pitons restaurant is a Caribbean restaurant that is named after the Piton mountains found on St. Lucia. It is a lovely environment that does not require a reservation and it had some of our favorite appetizers and one of the best desserts on the resort.

The Pavilion

The Pavilion is the largest dining area and acts as the breakfast buffet in the mornings. We had breakfast here every day except for one and we had lunch here one day.

The breakfast service is all self-serve except for your hot tea or coffee which your server brings to your table. I also requested gluten free toast and they brought that over to my table each morning. There is an omelet station, a smoothie station, and then stations with fruit, bread and pastries, juices, cold meats and cheeses, oatmeal and fixings, and the typical continental breakfast items (eggs, bacon, potatoes, etc.). There is also a cappuccino machine that does cappuccinos, espresso, lattes, etc. The cappuccino machine was open all day every day!

This space is also where they hosted their special “Select Guest” dinner for couples who were on their second trip or more to a Sandals resort (which we attended with my parents).

The Pavilion-” Select Guest” Dinner

The “Select Guest” dinner is held once a week (usually on Tuesday) to recognize the returning guests. The entire leadership team is present and introduced, they talk about their Sandals Foundation and ask for donations, and they celebrate any guests who are leveling up in their loyalty program. The meal felt extra special and was one of the best we had the whole trip. We were sat with another couple and were also joined by a member of the leadership team. At the end of the meal, each couple were each given a lovely gift of Jamaican Rum to enjoy.

Kimonos

Kimonos is one of the most coveted restaurants at the resort and does require a reservation. It is a Japanese hibachi where you choose an appetizer and dessert and then get to try all the meats and veggies on the dinner menu. They have a delicious Sake martini that is a must try and the atmosphere is beautiful. The two-story restaurant is settled on the side of a cliff and over the ocean, giving you a stunning view of the sea and the main area of the resort. It is up the hill on the way to the butler rooms, but you can take a shuttle if you don’t want to walk. It is also right next to the sushi restaurant Soy. I recommend making reservations as soon as you arrive because Kimonos will book up quickly!

Soy

Soy is a super popular Sushi restaurant that people frequent for dinner, and for pre-dinner snacks. We did not get a chance to go there ourselves, but everyone on the Facebook page absolutely raves about it.

La Toc

On our last night we got the opportunity to enjoy the fancy restaurant on the property, La Toc. It is a French restaurant that does require a reservation and requires “Resort Evening Attire”. This means: Dress pants or jeans for men, long or short sleeve dress shirts (with or without collar). Dress shoes or sandals. No shorts, t-shirts, sleeveless shirts, sneakers, flip flops or slippers. No hats.

Everyone raves about the escargot and how you absolutely have to try them. My dad gave them a try and said that he enjoyed them. The decor was lovely and elevated, the food rich and decadent, and the service impeccable.

Poolside Drinks

The resort offers 8 bars, and all the drinks are all inclusive all the time, which means you can have as much as you want, as often as you want. Most of the bars opened at 11:00am and had just about everything you could imagine. They also had a drink of the day every day and they had a photo of it displayed and also had servers walking around offering it to guests who were lounging by the pool. We had our fill of hummingbirds, strawberry mojitos, cosmopolitans, apple martinis, pina coladas, etc.

Have fun but stay hydrated! It is incredibly hot, and I recommend you balance your adult beverages with water. We took our own insulated cups so that our water stayed nice and cold as we baked by the pool or on the beach. The bartenders were happy to fill our cups up with ice water whenever we needed a refill.
